White House Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Legal and Operational Constraints

An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
