Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
